Richland College’s Brazos Gallery presents Reconstructing Perspective, featuring the multi-perspective landscapes of Chaddy Dean Smith and the research-inspired displays of Andrew Douglas Underwood. The exhibit re-evaluates optical and historical objectivity as inevitably subjective, offering geographic sites as the source of inquiry. The exhibition will open September 8 and run through September 24th, 2011 with an opening reception and artist talk on Thursday, September 8th from 4-7 PM. The exhibition will be open from 2-4 PM on Saturday the 24th of September for the DADA Fall Gallery Walk.
Chaddy Dean Smith, Photography professor at Texas A&M – Commerce, has created a series of award winning landscape triptychs, convincingly presented as a single landscape, yet photographed from multiple vantage points. The works offer a portrait of a singular multiplicity, indicative of an ever -expanding world in which fractured subjectivity and plurality dominate our interactions. Meanwhile, Andrew Douglas Underwood’s museum-esque displays catalog historical sites and objects as arcane cultural phenomena. The pieces are often presented under vitrines as handmade books of photographs, diagrams, and prints. Situating unique pairings and narrative time lines Underwood transforms strict documentation into a near nostalgic romance. Together the works question the objectivity of documentation, utilizing classical methods to reassess modernity.
